BRITISH AEROBIOLOGY FEDERATION |
|
|
INTRODUCTION
The British Aerobiology Federation was formed in 1990 to draw together all those interested in Aerobiology in the United Kingdom. The first President was Prof Jim Hirst, designer of the Hirst trap that is now used as the standard volumetric pollen and spore trapping method in most national monitoring systems world wide. Since then the presidents have been Dr John Lacey, Institute for arable crop research (IACR), Harpenden; Prof. Jean Emberlin, National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, University of Worcester, who was re-elected for a second term of four years in office and Dr Alastair McCartney of IACR. The current president is Dr Peter Burt from the Natural Resources Institute who was elected in May 2007 There are about 85 members including academics, environmental health officers and doctors. These are kept in touch with the biannual newsletter edited by Dr John Bailey, University of Leicester and Julie Corden. The British Aerobiology Federation holds regular scientific meetings, both on its own and with other organisations, and helps to organise workshops for the pollen monitoring network. |

Aerobiology is the scientific discipline focused on the transport of organisms and biologically significant materials through the atmosphere. Attention is given to the source of organisms or materials, release into the atmosphere, dispersion and deposition, and their impact on animal, plant or human systems. The general objectives of the Federation shall therefore be to: a) Foster research and study in the field of Aerobiology; b) Provide a means of communication between, and support of, individuals interested in aerobiology; c) Promote awareness of aerobiology and increase public knowledge of the subject; d) Provide a structure for the co-ordinated dissemination of pollen counts and other information to public and commercial organisations. THE BRITISH AEROBIOLOGY FEDERATION HAS RECENTLY BECOME A CHARITY If you would like to make a donation to our important work please make payment (cheque or bank order) to British Aerobiology Federation and send to:

AAIR - Asthma & Allergy Information and Research. Excellent site with lots of useful information, especially for hayfever patients. AAIR is the name of the website for the Leicester branch of the Midlands Asthma & Allergy Research Association (MAARA) whose headquarters is in Derby. MAARA - Midlands Asthma and Allergy Research Association MAARA is a charity helping people with asthma and allergy and conducting related research. EPI - European Pollen Information Pollen forecasts for Europe in map form. Lots of information about other European websites. NPARU - National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit The
UK's centre for the National Pollen Forecast has a comprehensive website
detailing the varied work of the Unit plus lots of information about hay
fever, allergies and pollen. |

The British Aerobiology Federation has produced a manual to assist those involved with, or those training for pollen and spore monitoring: "AIRBORNE POLLENS AND SPORES A GUIDE TO TRAPPING AND COUNTING" It covers the full procedures of pollen and spore monitoring: Chapter I - Introduction: The importance of the pollen count and features of it. Chapter II - Using the Burkard Spore trap: Covers preparation and changing of the drum, mounting the tape and use of 24 hour traps. Chapter III - Using a microscope: includes laboratory checklist and measuring and calibration of the microscope. Chapter IV - Pollen and spore counts: covers how to do a standard pollen count, how to convert the totals, using eyepiece graticules and vernier scales. Appendices: there are six appendices covering tape coating and slide mounting recipes, microscope structure, pollen identification, useful references, suppliers and a standard recording form. To obtain a manual: ISBN: 0-9525617-0-0, First Edition 1995, 60 pages. Prices: £5 students, £15 individuals, £25 corporate plus postage and package (UK £3.00). For overseas amounts on postage and packing please contact Beverley Adams-Groom as below. Payment
for the manual and for postage and packing are required in advance please.
