The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, which provides the UK’s pollen forecast, now plans to expand its current work, which will include increased consultancy for regional businesses, through the creation of a dedicated allergy and aerobiology (the study of biological particles in the air) test centre.

The Unit will link in with other areas of study, including applied sciences, sports and motion analysis and continue to enhance its links with Worcestershire Royal Hospital and private companies. New areas of combined study will include microbiology and research into eye allergies and wound care.

Professor Jean Emberlin, Director of NPARU, said: “There is a strong emphasis on air quality and health, something which we are only too aware of with illnesses such as asthma having a very high prevalence in the UK. This proposed new facility promises to be a unique opportunity to expand our work, especially investigating links between allergic diseases and environmental factors.”

May 2008

Work began on the new £6.5 million extension to the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU) at the University of Worcester in conjunction with Advantage West Midlands and Central Technology Belt.

The new two-storey facility will include many innovative features, including a climate-controlled room capable of testing products and the effects of illnesses such as asthma in different environmental conditions.

The building is expected to be completed by summer 2009.

    October 2008

The University of Worcester hosted a traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony on 17 October to mark a milestone in the construction of a £6.5m allergy and aerobiology test centre.

The ceremony celebrated the completion of the structural framework of the test centre. Representatives from the University of Worcester, NPARU and constructors Leadbitter were joined by local dignitaries including Deputy Mayor Andy Roberts for the event, which included the placing of a conifer on top of the two-storey structure to symbolise growth and bring luck.
